House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer was among 12 members of Congress who addressed 600 ADL lay leaders at the Capital. He was a lead sponsor of the Help America To Vote Act in 2002 and over the past few years has helped lead an effort to protect every American’s right to vote. He was a leader in successfully ending the discriminatory policy "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" of the military. One of Congress’s leading champions of human rights, his legislative agenda is much aligned with ADL’s mission.
In Legislatures around the country ADL has been working to ensure that all eligible Americans can exercise the right to vote. ADL is advocating to update the Voting Rights Act, which was struck down in 2013 by the Supreme Court. ADL opposes voter ID laws that threaten to disenfranchise millions of Americans. For Years, ADL has helped national, state and local efforts to protect the civil rights of LGBT people.
