Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law Institute To Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation presented a conference that demonstrated how twelve female and male survivors of sex trafficking established leadership roles in their communities. Accomplished presenters, they recounted how they were able - after decades of therapy, recovery, and healing - to make major contributions locally and nationally, in this field.
Two keynote speakers, Kathleen Mitchell and Vednita Carter were especially inspirational. Ms. Mitchell found the first of its kind advocacy program in a county jail for prostituted women. She has worked with the City of Phoenix prosecutor’s office in developing legal advocacy and legislation in this area.
Vednita Carter is an entrepreneur, author and founder of a St. Paul-based non profit organization to end all forms of prostitution and sex trafficking. President Obama presented her with the "Life Time Achievement Award" for outstanding work she has done over the past twenty-five years to end sex trafficking of women and girls.
