Carole Landis signed a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi urging them to vote on H.R.1865, the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 (FOSTA), and the need for the required legislation to clarify Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA). This bill is scheduled to be brought to the floor for a vote on 2/27/18. 1st Circuit Court recommended the child victims seek a legislative remedy/justice against websites that are engaged in (knowingly) facilitating human trafficking, such as Backpage (Doe v Backpage). That ruling held that even if Backpage had participated in the crime of sex trafficking, Section 230 shielded the company from the claims filed by child victims. The Internet Association has endorsed HR186, and the Senate’s counterpart - Bill S1693, the Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 (SESTA) that currently has 67 bipartisan Senate co-sponsors.
If passed this legislation would ensure that websites that knowingly facilitate sex trafficking will be held accountable for their actions.
